Vitamin D protects you

Vitamine D protects your body in many ways. Mainly it helps absorb calcium and phosphorus in the body and thus helps with strengthening bones. Also, if you take Vit D when daylight is few, it helps to not feel too depressed. In a recent study (march-aril 2020) done by AZ Delta roeselare, Belgium during the first Covid19 wave in Belgium they saw that most patients had been Vit D deficient in the previous years, meaning less immunisation for viruses and therefore more prone to being ill.

How to measure your values?
Take a bloodtest and measure your Vit D. it should be between 30-100 to be within the normal values.

When do you take Vit D supplements?

  • blood value 50-100: optimal. no need for supplement or take <400IU per day from October until May

  • blood value 30-49: normal. take 400-1000IU per day from October until May

  • blood value 20-39: low. take 3000-5000 IU per day and test again after 3 months.

  • blood value <20: defeciency. take 5000 IU per day, test again after 3 months

Sunlight in Belgium is not enough from October until May. From May until October the sun stands high enough for our body to be able to absorb the right amount if we expose our hands and face for about 15-30min per day in the sunlight between 11h00 and 15h00. That is, when our blood values ar between 30-100.

Mind you that sunscreen does not help the absorption of sunlight, on the contrary. So if you are easy to burn by the sun, just take some extra vitamin D instead of exposing you to the direct sunlight.
